DIARY: 2013

Last day of the 2013 is one to look back on a wonderful year. I think it's even the best year of my life! Our 4 month journey across South-America as a absolute highlight, following by moving in together, but with other beautiful things as well. I witnessed the people around me take life changing steps. Starting a business. Buying a house. Having a baby, or a couple of cats. Moving in together. Travelling around the world, like me. It seems like 2013 was an eventful year, and not only for me. A year to never forget. I hope 2014 will be as lovely as 2013, for at least.
For today I made a diary of all the special moments of this year. 64 pictures to be exact. And still it's not all I wanted to show you! A little thing about every month:

January: A lot of snow and my friend Desiree turning 30! She has just told me a few days before she was expecting, but it still was a big secret by then!

February: A family trip to Altea, a little place in Spain where my parents live. And preparing our big trip.. Roel is leaving next month, so February is all about getting our vaccinations, spent all the time we have together, last minute shopping and a great farewell party!

March: Roel's leaving for Buenos Aires, 8 weeks before me. We planned on meeting 11 weeks later, he would start travelling around Argentina and I would be by myself in Buenos Aires for 3 weeks as well. But within a week we missed eachother so much, we dropped that plan and he was picking me up at the airport as soon as I set foot on Argentina ground. :)
And my brother and his girlfriend move into their new appartment, which is amazingly beautiful! Little housewarming party there as well. :)
And my friend Neomie's 30th birthday surpriseparty! 1983 was a good year of production! ;)

April: Getting a little used to the fact of Roel being away and having a lot of festival fun with Daisy! ♥ And spent a lot of quality time with all of my friends, since I was leaving very soon. Farewellparty.

May: Yes, the day's finally there! The start of my great adventure! I was so excited and afraid at the same time. But it turned out fine. Very fine! It was wonderful to see Roel again and we had the best time acting like locals in Buenos Aires, visited the Iguazu Falls and discovered the mountains of Salta.

June: We started a new month in a new country: Chili. San Pedro de Atacama to be exact. An amazing starry sky and a great place to start the Uyuni tour in Bolivia, across the Salt Flats. Bolivia was by far the best place we have been. The people are so humble and kind. We've been to Sucre, Cochabamba, La Paz, Copacobana and the beautiful Isla del Sol. From there we crossed the border to Peru.

July: Peru was a whole new world. Much more touristic and commercial. Plus they're not very kind to animals, in contrast to Bolivia and Argentina. Although we saw beautiful places (Machu Picchu, Islas Ballestas) and did amazing things (Inca Jungle Tour was epic!), we didn't like the country that much. After 4 weeks of travelling around, we took the slow-boat across the Amazone to Colombia. And with Colombia we fell in love...
And, Roel turning 28 in jungletown Iquitos!

August: Staying with locals in Bogota, enjoying the rest in Popayan, visiting the Zoo in Cali, playing 'tejo' and being overwhelmed by beauty in Salento, end up in the hospital in Medellin and relax big time in the sun at the Caribbean Coast... A beautiful end of our trip!
The boat trip to Panama was a disaster! San Blas are paradise, but the captain was a very bad man, blugh! Don't wanna talk about that again...

September:  We made it to Panama in time to catch our plain home. And there were great things waiting for us as well. Seeing all my friends again. Turning 30. The birth of little Felix, Desiree's son. And my stepsister gave birth to a boy as well: Luca, who I'm finally going to meet in the new year!
And, ofcourse, the start of Flower Child! Thanks you all for following and reading my blog!

October: Getting sick again... Going to the hospital a lot. Turns out the bacteria I incurred in Colombia is gone, but my body is still damaged. It can take a year to heal and be whole again!

November: Winter, blugh... Preparations for 'Sinterklaas', which I am celebrating for the first time in over 10 years! And the 'Zwarte Piet' discussion, which really made me think.

December: Roel starting a new job, a citytrip to Groningen, holiday festivities... and finally some money to shop! :) And tonight a smashing NYE!

I wish you all the best NYE! See you in 2014...!

denim vest - Monki, top - Zara, high waist jeans - H&M &denim, belt - H&M, sneakers - New Balance

I plead guilty... I did some serious shopping! This oversized black denim vest was on my wishlist for a long time. And I ran in the sneakers on the Swan Market on a vintage stand. They're unworn, but it's an old style and that's just what made me fall in love with them! They're glued to my feet from that moment on.

Now it's time to decide what I'm going to wear tomorrow... New Year's Eve! For me it's the least fun holiday of the year. I never know what to do. Go to a party? Which one? Staying in with my love? Throw a party for friends? This year we decided to book a hotel room in our own town, so we can enjoy eachother and all the luxury that comes with the room. Taking a bath while drinking champagne.. stuff like that! And it's near the Erasmus Bridge, right where the national firework takes place. We'll meet some friends there. I'm really really looking forward to it! What are you up to? Have a nice one, anyway!

'Every December the radio plays songs from our parents' youth and they go all crazy and start dancing'. That's one of the things I read today on Twitter about the Top 2000. Made me think... Am I that old? ;) But I've always loved 'my parents' music. Music from the '60 and '70, the best they've ever made. But the Top 2000 is more than that. It's a list of the best music of all times. ALL TIMES! And listening to it makes me as happy as can be.
Today I share with you my personal Top 10. And I really like to know, what's your #1?

10. Sam Cooke - Bring it on home

First love...

9. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Childhood sentiment...

8. Dolly Parton - Jolene

Because Dolly rocks. And this is her best song! (although it was a close call with 'I will always love you'!)

7. Queen - Love Of My Life

This show... Amazing!

6. Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine

Motown music is the greatest music! That's definitely one to make a new list about..!

5. The Doors - Light my fire.

The Doors... This doesn't need explanation.

4. Bill Withers - Ain't no sunshine

3. Billy Joel - Piano Man

Beautiful song, always gives me this strange happy-but-at-the-same-time sad feeling.

2. Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight

Just amazingly wonderful. The guitar... ♥!!

1. Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes - Of you don't know me by now

It's was very very hard to choose between this one and the one performed by Simple Red, but I guess I like this one best. After all this song is my absolute favourite. I love the lyrics, the music and the sense in the song!

Time for a little Christmas diary! I had the best time, I love Christmas!
The day before Christmas we annually celebrate 'Christmas Afternoon' in Enschede (the city where Roel has his roots), which means party hard! Christmas eve means passing out drunk in bed or on the couch at 8 PM... ;)
We spent Christmas day at Roel parents, with his family. He's one of four children, so it's pretty buzzing! His nephew's are the centre of attention, this blond little angel Merlijn is as cute as a button!
We visited my brother Wesley, his girlfriend Susan and their 2 kittycats in Nijmegen for Boxing Day. We played games and Susan made us the best 3-course dinner. We had to leave way to early to catch the train, we'll sleep over next time!
When we came home Roel surprised me with some lovely Christmas gifts as well ♥.
I'm spoiled this year, with gifts and warmth! Means a lot.

Only 3 days in 2013... Which means listening to the radio a lot! Top 2000, the greatest list of all time. Playing non-stop. It's my favourite from-Christmas-till-NewYears tradition! Tomorrow I will share with you my personal top 10. But for now, enjoy this diary and the last Saturday of the year!

dress - H&M trend, jacket - Zara, boots - H&M trend, cotton dress - H&M divided

The day after Christmas! I'm still food-hungover from all the tasty snacks and meals, you?
For Boxing Day I choose to wear this long, black, pleated dress. I guess I would fit in a picture back in the '30s in this dress, and that's what I love about it so much! The boots and, outside, the leather jacket spices it up a little. Comfy, sturdy, chic!
The flu left me a little Christmas present as well: a big cold sore... Excuse me for that!
So, I'm getting ready for today now: 3rd day of Christmas: diner with some friends. Y'all have a nice day! And if you're at work, hang in there. Weekend is near!

John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1969, wishing the world a happy Christmas with a message: 'War is over! If you want it.', referring to the horrible Vietnam war. 2 years later, in 1971, they released the song 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' as a protest song. 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' was the culmination of more than two years of peace activism undertaken by John Lennon and Yoko Ono that began with the bed-ins they convened in March and May 1969, the first of which took place during their honeymoon.

dress - H&M trend, bag - Zara, boots - H&M

Actually, I showed you guys this outfit before last month, here. But I think this picture shows a more complete look. Bag, shoes, background... And I simple love the dress. But I told you that before as well! ;)

So enough about that. What are you up to this weekend? Yesterday I had this fab and girly Christmas dinner with my friends Eline and Irene, which I quite shown off for in the kitchen. And I'm spending today at the Swan Market (more about that very soon!) in Rotterdam and getting myself ready for Christmas. Coming week will be all about big Christmas meals and family visits. And yes, I'm looking forward to it! What are your plans?

Sorry for the lack of outfit posts. I've been sick for a few days. And my photographer a.k.a my boyfriend has got a full time job now, so it's hard to get a moment to shoot some pics. But I still love doing it more than anything else, plus I bought myself some pretty new stuff, so I got a lot to show you and that's coming to you very soon!
For now, last weeks diary. A great week! This is what you're looking at:

Gijssie on the bed. just put on some clean sheets... :) // my mom and stepdad were married 12,5 year last sunday. a beautiful and appropriate quote // Daisy and I went to see the movie 'Inside Llewyn Davis' on monday - great movie -, and had some fresh mint tea while acting funny in the lobby afterwards // fresh fruit from the market, loving it! // tuesday and wednesday Roel and I went on a citytrip to Groningen and had the best time. enjoying a warm bath, drinking beers in the Pintelier, walking around the city with all the Christmas lights...  I love us! // o, and ginger ale with fresh mint is a very good idea, yum.

Have a nice weekend, y'all!

coat - H&M, blouse - Zara, sweater - Zara, jeans - H&M, sneakers - Nike, scarf - H&M

She's Rotterdam at heart, just like me. We met at acting class and turned out to love the same music, the same parties, the same festivals, the same style, the same stores, the same shows. But where I'm obsessed with cats, she's more of a dog person. And now Daisy is taking her love for dogs to another level.
Not only has she enriched her life with cutiepie Ruud, she's now starting her own dog treats bakery!
Koekiemonsters is everything your dog wants: It's tasty, it's a treat and everything Daisy makes is organic. Next Saturday Daisy has a booth on the Swan Market. So if you have a dog and you wanna spoil him for Christmas, or you know a dog owner and you're looking for an original gift, or if you're just curious like me, come check it out!
For more info, visit the website: KoekiemonstersSwan Market
See you there!

Ok... tea is not really food. But it's something I drink all day every day. In the early morning when I come in at work, when I meet my friends at the cafe or on the couche at night... there's always a reason for a fresh cup of tea. Today I share with you my favourite flavours and spices:

1.  Green & white tea grapefruit chilipepper, Albert Heijn

All the good from green and white tea, citrus with a twist and the spicyness of pepper. A combination that made me very curious! And my curiosity was rewarded, what a delicious tea! The chilipepper leaves a warm and snappy tinkling behind in your mouth and combined with the sweetness of grapefruit that's a pretty good thing. This is my absolute favourite!

2. Rooibos honey blend, Picwick

I love to drink a cup of this tea before I go to sleep. Rooibos is known for its calming effect and I believe it makes me sleep tight. The honey brings a sweet and soft taste.

3. Green tea lotus bamboo, Albert Heijn

The first time I had this tea I wasn't sure if i loved it or hated it. It's a flavour I never had before, one that challenged me. Just like sushi. But, just like with sushi, I got used to this new sensation and with every sip I loved it more and more.

4.  Hammam Mint, Rituals.

Like everything from Rituals, this tea feels like a real treat. Maybe it's the golden box, the wonderful aroma or the luxurious silky bags, but it's really something special. We got this one as a present from Roels sister, a present we enjoy!

5.  Green tea jasmine, Lipton

An oldie but a goodie. Green tea ensures that food is less rapidly transformed into calories, it reduces the risk of cancer and heart diseases and it's full of antioxidants. Reasons enough to drink this stuff. Jasmin tea always reminds me of dimsum-dates with my girlfriends, it's one of China's most famous green teas. It adds a mild flavour to the naturally bitter green tea. The real chinese stuff is the best, but the triangles from Lipton make a nice second.

What's your favourite tea? I'd love to try new flavours!

sweater - Monki, high waist jeans - H&M &denim, sneakers - New Balance, beanie and sunglasses - H&M

With the flu coming up all I wanted to do last week was hiding in a big knitted sweater. I found this one at Monki and it's my instant favourite. At the checkout the saleswoman was telling me she had the sweater herself and it's so comfy and easy to put on in the morning. And she's right... it's addictive... I wore it 2 times in a row last week and I normally I don't do 2 times in a row!
Today is the first day of my little vacation and tomorrow Roel and I go on a 2-day city trip to Groningen, a town in the upper north of The Netherlands. I'll keep you posted!

Happy Monday!

A random day in town, with some warm winter sunlight and comfy sneakers. I have a thing for cotton bags, I guess out of sheer comfortability, and I especially love this one because of the army print. Gives it something extra!
Happy thursday, guys! Count-down to the weekend!

My name is Eline and I’m one of the guestbloggers on the blog of my good friend Linda. Over the years I’ve collected images on the internet. Images which inspire me on my personal style, home decoration, delicious recipes en words that touch me. I’m a pinahololic you can say. Pinterest is the perfect platform for me to collect all my inspiration. My own moodboards inspire me every day. From now on I will share the pictures and words that inspired me on pinterest and a lot of blogs in a monthly item. So Flowerchild is my personal platform to share these beautiful images with you. I hope you’ll enjoy and most of all get inspired!

Winter wonderland
Snow hasn't been falling yet in Holland, but day by day I feel I'm getting more and more in a winter mood. It's getting colder, so I really have an urge for spending my evenings by cocooning. Light some candles, put on my chunky socks and some comfortable clothes.. I love it! But on the other hand I love going outside for a walk through the city. I live in Utrecht, a beautiful historical city. It's like Amsterdam with it's canals, but smaller. During winter there are lights all over the historical city, in trees along the canals and in shopping streets. I always get a bit melancholical by it! ;-) A lot of memories are coming back. These lights, atmosphere and dynamics in the city are a reason to get out of my cocoon en enjoy the life outside my cozy home.
Another big reason to get out of my cocoon is the real winter wonderland. I love to walk in nature and feeling the freezing air on my skin. Especially when it has snowed. Looking at the white landscape always makes me a bit humble. The beauty of nature... something I have to treasure en enjoy a lot more. Maybe a resolution for 2014?

Enjoy the winter!!

A pair of shoes - Vincent van Gogh - 1886 - Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam
A pair of boots - Vincent van Gogh - 1887 - Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, Maryland

When I think about shoes, I think about fashion. I think about Converse and New Balance and about Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw. When I think of the combination of shoes and art, I think about the catwalk. Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo. But this is a very different story. This is about painter Vincent van Gogh's love for shoes. Old and used shoes is what inspired him. The story goes Van Gogh's saw the shoes in 'A pair of shoes' on a flea market and felt so inspired he had to have them and make 'm the subject of his painting. What inspires me in his shoe-paintings is his view on shoes - way different than mine ever was. Before painting, he first took his shoes out for a walk on a rainy, muddy day to create the effect he was wishing for: A tribute to the working man. The Van Gogh Museum speculates that they may be symbolic for Van Gogh of his difficult passage through life. No fashion in that at all!

"Dirty shoes and roses can both be good in the same way."

Legends never really die. Rest in peace, great man!

vest - H&M divided, jumpsuite - Forever 21, necklace - H&M, nailpolish - gift from 'Sinterklaas' ;)

This is an outfit that's really 'me': a short, sexy jumpsuite combined with a thick, oversized vest. Add a cute, little tiger necklace and some bright red nailpolish and my look is on. Not a look I can wear to work - like I told you in my '10 facts' post, I'm a social worker working with youngsters and their parents - but on an easy day off. Like last Wednesday, chilling with my friend Sanne who's leaving for a big trip next week. Yes, the same Sanne who wrote as a guestwriter yesterday. And while listening to her stories and assist her with her last preparations, my 'wanderlust' is fueled and I can't wait for making plans for a new trip!
What's your biggest dream?

WANDERLUST; A strong desire or urg towander or travel and explore the world.

woensdag 4 december 2013

When I started this blog I had the plan to share more with you than fashion only. I want to be a platform for guest writers, share other interests with you like art and travelling and be a sign bord for Rotterdam by sharing great places to go and photographe and interview people about their passions. Outfits and fashion inspiration still have the upper hand, but that's my passion! Today I want to add more depth with sharing with you 10 facts about me. Some personal things and general stuff. Here we go:

1. I love to sleep late. I'm a night owl. I always go to bed way to late, with puffy eyes as a result. I try to be in bed on time, because I have to with work and so, but I don't like it. I got my energy at night! And I HATE waking up early... When I have the day off I sleep till noon, at least. Sometimes people ask me if I don't feel like I'm wasting my day. No, I don't. Do you feel like wasting your night by sleeping? My wish is to find a job one day that I can do whenever I want. Like writing. And go to bed whenever I want, sleeping 'till noon everyday!

2. In 'real life' I work for juvenile probation, part of child protective services. I work with youth that's breaking bad and it's my job to try to get them on the right path again. It's hard sometimes, but challenging and I really like to do it. I am a graduate social worker and my heart goes out for troubled kids. I worked on a residential house before and did that with great pleasure as well. Something completely different than fashion, right?

3. I still live in the city I was born and raised. Not much of an adventure, right? But I love Rotterdam! I've seen a lot of places, and some I fell deeply in love with (New York! Paris! Buenos Aires! London! All of Bolivia!), but it always turns out there's no place like home. My mom lives in Spain, my little brother moved to Nijmegen and my boyfriend was born on the other side of the country, but I stick to Rotterdam.

4. Red is my favourite color. Always has been! If it comes to clothes I'm very into black, but I appreciate a red dress from time to time. And I got a weakness for pink stuff. Can't help it, I'm a girl.

5. I'm a HUGE animal lover. ♥ I've got 2 cats which I adore, but if nobody protected me from myself  my house would turn into a Zoo in no time. I grew up with cats and birds, and I still remember the moment I got a guinea pig for my 5th birthday. So happy!

6. I travelled around South-America for 4 months. Best time of my life! My boyfriend was my travel mate and we visited Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Panama. It was an impressive journey! First: living towards it, saying farewell to my friends at home, my cats, my home. There: the amazing beauty of nature, meeting new people, other cultures, travelling from place to place. It was great to share this adventure with my boyfriend. It strengthened our bond and it's an experience no one can ever take away from us. The greatest thing I've ever done! I'm already longing for another long trip... Asia this time, for at least 4 months. But first: Save enough money!

7. Before my boyfriend moved in, my house was like a museum. Pictures everywhere! I love taking pictures. Capturing the most beautiful places in town, places I've been to, or moments with my loved ones. The cat on his cutest way. And yes, a selfie so now and then. Now we agreed to a few nice frames to fill in the room, but the toilet door is still full of postcards and photographs. And I still have to develop a lot of pictures from my South-America trip, so there's many more to come!

8. My friends are like family to me! With a tough childhood and little family to fall back on I created my own base. I got a few friends that I know I can always count on. It's like unconditional and they mean the world to me! I love to see us all grow up, and share important moments. Graduation, marriage, babies, starting an own business. But also the hard parts of life, serious things. I feel blessed we are part of eachothers lives like that. Don't get me wrong, I am and always have been very close with my brother, he's my #1 and I love him to the moon and back. And my mom and I solved our problems years ago. But I cherish the bond that I have with those girls. I think it's really something special.

9. I'm addicted to TV shows! In my daily life I don't watch a lot of TV. I like to watch the current affairs programs so now and then, but that's about it. But when we download a series and we begin to watch I get óbsessed. Dexter... The Sopranos... Breaking Bad... We spent a lot of time in bed with the laptop, so to say. What's your favourite show?

10. My phone is glued to my hand. Facebook, Instagram, Bloglovin', Whatsapp, Twitter... The news... I want to follow it all. It's one of my resolutions to pay more attention to my loved ones and less to my phone. The last to weeks I had to go without it (because it's broken and it had to be fixed), and that has done me right. I look forward to get it back, but I'm gonna stuck to my resolution!

So... Now I would like to hear a fact about you! Tell me something about yourself on Facebook or leave a message underneath. I'm looking forward to it!

blouse - Mango, skirt - H&M trend, boots - H&M

A white skirt. For winter. It's a risk. I wasn't sure about this item until I put it on. It's a solid material, it's quilted and a little off-white. It screams winter! I see myself wearing this on a cold day, matching the snow... Today I went for a save combo with black, and dark burgundy nails. But with the entire winter ahead there's enough time to explore other options!

After a beautiful indian summer, fall kicked in hard last month. Dark and rainy days, storm ... and beautiful colours outside. A November how November's supposed to be. Time to add some colours to my look! November is also the month I got my fringe, yaaay! Still very glad I made that choice.
Now December is already here. Holidays are coming! A new challenge to put together some fine holiday outfits. Do you already have a clue?

Ph: Lovely by Lucy

She started her blog around the time I started to read fashion blogs, and I am one of her first hour fans. She took a sprint to the top. In less than 2,5 years she collected 4.221 followers on Bloglovin', 6.448 people liked her Facebook page and she has got 41.985 (!!) followers on Instagram right now! She's also part of the OOTD Magazine team as a writer/contributor, she writes a monthly item for GirlsLove2Travel and she teamed up with Asos, Nelly, 7 for all mankind and many more brands and magazines.
And that's not only because she's great in PR. Her blog is full of high quality pictures of her no nonsense style. Clean and simple, from high street to high end. Her favourite fashion colour is black, mostly in the mix with gray, and still she pops out of every picture. She's got style just the way I like it!
It seems like Lucy ís 'Lovely by Lucy', it's like she líves her blog. She obviously loves blogging, breathes fashion and it seems she truly appreciates the support of all her readers (who she sweetly calls 'lovelies'). Other than lifestyleblogger Valentine I wrote about last 'Blogger crush', Lucy doesn't talk about her personal life much. When she got seriously ill early this year she posted this: 'I haven’t really shared on the blog what’s going on with you guys, partly because there’s a fine line between sharing bits of your life and sharing all of it which might make Lovely By Lucy more of a lifestyle blog than a fashion blog. Because you know, I do more than just shopping and online shopping and going to events and shooting my outfits, but that’s just what I share on this blog. Partly I also haven’t told you because I know many of you might not be interested much because you come to Lovely By Lucy for outfit inspiration (which is great) and that’s it, I don’t want to bore anyone with the nick nacks of my personal life. I do want to thank you however for all the support you’ve been giving me, that really means the world!' And that says it all.
So that's Lucy. A gorgeous girl blogging about what she wears, what she wants to wear and what inspires her. And she inspires me.
What are your thoughts about Lucy? Are you following her already?
And who's your favourite fashionblogger?
