ART || TERRY RICHARDSON

Is Terry Richardson an artist or a predator?’ the New York Magazine wrote about a month ago. Richardson, born August 14 1965, is one of the most (if not thé most) controversial fashion photographer I've ever heard about. He's a hero for some. He's good with the top of the celebrity world: he and Lady Gaga collaborated on a book (Lady Gaga x Terry Richardson), and he made videos for Beyoncé (XO) and Miley Cyrus (Wrecking Ball). He works for luxury brands Valentino and YSL, and mass-market brands Target and H&M. He even had Barack Obama in front of his camera! Richardson has the habit of including himself in shots of celebrities, and well, the all seem to love him. It's like an honor to pose with him, and adopt some aspect of his signature look, such as his glasses or thumbs-up gesture (source).

But there an other side to Terry Richardson as well. There's a hailstorm of rumors that he routinely sexually exploits and assaults models. And no, not famous ones like Kate Moss or Cara Delevingne - he wouldn't dare! -, but young, vulnerable girls, who are new in business. The proud pervert has, outside his commercial work, produced a series of extremely explicit images—often including himself naked and erect (source). During the last few years a lot of women stood up and told their story, about how 'uncle Terry' wanted them to get naked, how he pressed his dick in their faces, how he abused them, and how photo shoots turned out in sexual act after sexual act.

The dutch NRC quotes: "But [Richardson] seems either unaware of or unwilling to acknowledge the ways in which coercion can be unspoken and situational. A prominent photography agent identifies the potential for abuse. “Kate Moss wasn’t asked to grab a hard dick,” this person says. “Miley Cyrus wasn’t asked to grab a hard dick. H&M models weren’t asked to grab a hard dick. But these other girls, the 19-year-old girl from Whereverville, should be the one to say, ‘I don’t think this is a good idea’? These girls are told by agents how important he is, and then they show up and it’s a bait and switch. This guy and his friends are literally like, ‘Grab my boner.’ Is this girl going to say no? And go back to the village? That’s not a real choice. It’s a false choice."

So, is Terry Richardson a predator in my opinion? I think he is. Does that make him less of an artist? I don't think so. The thing is, it doesn't matter how talented he is and how amazing his pictures are. He's a pervert. A molester. He abuses his power over these young girls (and boys!). And I think that's reason enough for all those celebs, model agencies, magazines and brands, to boycott him and his work. 'Cause who wants to contribute to the platform of a outright criminal?

I'm curious... what's your opinion?

  2. Haha, goed gelezen hierboven.
